Speedo Vanquisher Goggles
best triathlon goggles?
i’m getting ready to do my first triathlon, and i have a LOT of work to do on my swimming. I’m getting ready to start training and need a pair of goggles. I was just wondering what would be best to train with. Is it worth it to spend $17 on the speedo vanquishers, or should i just get some cheaper ones? Any other tips on how to best prepare would be appreciated, as well. thanks!!!
You do NOT want leaky goggles, so they’re worth spending a little extra money on. That said, not all goggles work the same for all people. The Vanquishers don’t work for me at all- they don’t fit my face. I really like Aqua Sphere Caimans. I went to a talk with a swim expert from the LA Tri Club, and he said he could only use kids goggles (he had a small nose bridge). It really is individual.
The best way to pick goggles is to put them on WITHOUT the strap. They should suction to your face. If they don’t, they’re the wrong shape for your face and you should try another pair. If you can go to a swim shop for your first pair, you’ll save yourself a lot of stress. After you figure out what works for you, you can often buy them on line for less.
I agree with the comment about the tinting. Nothing more annoying than doing an open water swim and not being able to sight because of the glare.
As for training- where are you starting? Did you swim when you were younger? If so, I’d recommend finding a masters group. Even better would be finding a masters group with lots of triathletes. Although there is crossover, there are drills and skills specific to triathlon that are helpful.
If you can’t swim freestyle at all- find a coach. If you have a local tri club, they may be able to help you with locating someone. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and you might only need a couple of lessons to send you down the right path.
Unlike biking and running, you need more technique than strength or basic endurance. Learn to swim correctly from the start, and you’ll save yourself lots of frustration later on.
