what is thermo ply that they use to build houses today? does that take the place of ply wood?
Thermoply is a man made product that is used for new home construction in the mid to southwest regions of the US. It’s basically a very heavy duty cardboard coated with plastics. The purpose of Thermoply is act as a sheathing material for the outside of a new home. Thermoply is used instead of plywood because it is much cheaper for the builder than plywood. Thermoply, however, does not meet most building codes in the US. Plywood is a load bearing member for shear loadings. Thermoply has no structural value whatsoever. For this reason, most new homes that are built with Thermoply have metal diagonal braces within the interior and exterior walls in key areas to provide lateral stability to the structure.
