Are state borders within the EU important?

Our friends from the EU keep reassuring us that state borders within the European Union are lax and practically formal, without real significance. Why is then so important that a new country is outlined on the European map within Serbian sovereign territory?
They claim that in a few years from now, borders will not matter anyway. If we are all to enjoy the fruits of a common market regardless of the internal borders, and passports are to become a thing of the past, then what’s the fuss about Kosovo becoming a separate entity?

Borders within the EU are non-existent anymore and even when crossing from France to Switzerland for instance, little if none interest will be shown for the passport, since the initial check-in is done on the external borders of the EU.
Now as for Kosovo, is to please the thieving Albanians, that the White House inhabitant wants to push for settlement.
They want a separate entity of a country to have within their grasp since they know that the proud Serbian people will and can strike back should something is contrary to their country’s interest.
Is the classic British recipe of “divide and rule”.
