Is 700 feet to low to put the landing gear down?
A 767 is about to land, the pilots forget to put the gear down, they get an aural warning at 700 feet.
Is that too late to put the gear down and land safely? Is a go around required?
Not a test Q. It actually happened. The pilots just forgot. “the pilots had been stood down and said further action might be taken after investigation”
When i first heard about it, I thought the same as Rob, but the other A’s make a lot of sense.
Can a plane land safely if you put the gear down at 700 feet? Yes, but there are several problems.
Most airlines require a “stabilized approach” no later than 1000 feet above the ground. That means having the airplane fully configured with the speed stable at the final approach speed. If the airplane is not fully configured and stable by 1000 feet, a go around is required.
If the pilots “forgot” to lower the gear, there are much bigger problems. It means the appropriate checklists were not completed and there may be other items missed. That would call for an immediate go around to have time to sort out the problem and fix it.
