How big is the biggest wave in history?
* he Chilean wave of 22 May 1960, which hit Chile and Hawaii (caused by the largest ever earthquake recorded, at magnitude 9.6);
* the Alaskan wave caused by the earthquake on 27 March, 1964 (the second biggest quake ever recorded at magnitude 9.2) which caused damage in Alaska, Canada and Hawaii;
* the Krakatoa wave from the famous volcanic explosion of 27 August 1883, featured in the movie Krakatoa – East of Java. With Hollywood’s well known eye for accuracy, Krakatoa is actually WEST of Java.
* The Lituya Bay Alaska, mega tsunami wave of July 9th 1958.

tsunami damage at Lituya Bay The Lituya Bay wave is generally described as the largest tsunami ever recorded in modern times, and has been given the special name of mega-tsunami. It was caused by a massive landslide, triggered by an earthquake of magnitude 8.3. When the wave rushed across the bay it ran up the valley walls to a height of 576 m at its maximum, (1720 ft) and over 100 m for the rest of the bay area.
